The Madonna dell'Orto was Tintoretto's favourite church, near to the house where he lived. Tintoretto himself, his wife Faustina, his son Domenico, his daughter Marietta were buried in this church.
Tintoretto took part in the ambitious refurbishment of the church. He decorated the organ with the Presentation of the Virgin, the completed the Cappella Contarini with the Miracle of St Agnes, then the culmination of the church furnishing came in the choir with the gigantic canvases of Moses Receiving the Tables of the Law on the left interior wall of the choir and the Last Judgment on the right interior wall.
