Two historiated initials cluster around the Ordinary and Canon of the Mass. The picture shows folio 147v, on which a larger initial for the "Sursum corda" depicts a priest standing at an altar with a chalice, while a deacon behind him raises the pax. Below it, on the same opening, is an initial for the Preface to the sequence of full-page miniatures that form a Passion cycle immediately preceding the Canon of the Mass. This initial shows John the Baptist and an angel jointly holding a vesica-shaped frame enclosing the Paschal Lamb. | |
