Various paintings (Paris, 1886-87)
by Vincent van GOGH

Van Gogh planned to go to Paris in the hope that the new movements in Parisian painting, of which he had heard from his brother, might provide him with new directions for his work. From 1886 to 1888 he adopted the Impressionist and Pointillist techniques.

The subjects van Gogh tackled in Paris were typically Parisian. His windmills were not Dutch, they were on the Montmartre; the women he painted were not peasants, they were acquaintances met in restaurants and boulevards. He painted almost 230 paintings during his stay in Paris, more than in any comparable period of his life. He tried his hand at new subjects.
