Paintings in the asylum: the asylum and its environs (Saint-Rémy, May 1889-May 1890)
by Vincent van GOGH

To escape harassment from local inhabitants van Gogh left Arles in May 1889 and moved into a sanatorium (an asylum), Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, in the nearby village of Saint-Rémy. There he hoped he would be able to work quietly and have medical supervision in case of a recurrence of his epilepsy.

In the beginning of his treatment in the asylum van Gogh did not leave the institute, he found his subjects in its vast garden; he painted the irises and lilac in flower. The low wall that enclosed the asylum remained for weeks the mental borderline that he would not cross.

Later, unlike his fellow inmates, van Gogh had not been committed to the asylum. He could leave the cloistered halls once the day's work was done and retire to his cell. He needed subjects, so he repeatedly turned his attention to the no-man's-land between the wide world out there and his own confined world.
