Towards the end of his life Paolo Veronese's creative imagination becomes veiled with an inner poetry. His colours no longer stand out in brilliant juxtapositions but become more modulated with rich effects of light and shade. In the last decade of his life Veronese painted two large decorative cycles of religious pictures (eleven canvases for the Venetian church of San Nicolò dei Frari, popularly known as San Nicolò della Lattuga, and ten canvases inspired by stories from the Old and New Testaments, known as the Duke of Buckingham series), and many altarpieces and other religious paintings, including several Crucifixes for various churches.
