The Berthold Sacramentary (MS M.710 at the Morgan Library) is an opulent and conceptually ambitious early 13th-century liturgical manuscript, produced at the Weingarten Abbey in Swabia between 1215 and 1217 under Abbot Berthold von Hainburg (abbacy 1200-1232). For its cover, illuminations, and even script, it is the masterpiece of Weingarten illumination and a major work of Romanesque art. The book still retains its original jewelled binding, which includes representations of the abbey's patron saints (Martin and Oswald) and Abbot Berthold himself.

The manuscript consists of 164 vellum folios. Most of the 24 full-page miniatures (depicting scenes related to the text of the Masses) are by a forceful and expressive artist, the Master of the Berthold Sacramentary, named after this book. There are also small miniatures and historiated initials. The richly applied gold leaf is mirror-like; the original protective curtains placed over some of the initials and miniatures are still sewn in the manuscript, which also contains numerous embroidered repairs.

Although the manuscript was formerly known as the Berthold Missal, it is, in fact, a Sacramentary. Unlike the Missal (which has all of the texts recited by the priest at Mass), the Sacramentary contains only those for the celebrant of high Mass. Accordingly, the manuscript consists of five sections: Calendar, Ordo Missae, Temporale, Sanctorale, and Missae Votivae.

The Berthold Sacramentary is one of the last great Romanesque liturgical books in Germany. It integrates treasure-binding aesthetics directly into the illumination, and it stands at the stylistic pivot between Romanesque monumentality and Gothic expressiveness. Its iconographic program is unusually coherent, shaped by liturgical function rather than narrative cycles.
