Drawings
by Lucas CRANACH the Elder

The Cranach workshop created a large store of pictorial models with attractive details such as heads and animals that could be copied and included in new paintings. The quality of the surviving workshop materials suggests that they were made by the master alone.

For the portraits and models Lucas Cranach perfected a technique which was then seldom used: the oil sketch on prepared paper. He made his studies by this technique.
