Religious themes (until 1515)
by Lucas CRANACH the Elder

We can only make assumptions about the artistic training of Lucas Cranach the Elder. He was almost thirty by the time he arrived in Vienna in about 1500, where he quickly found his feet in university circles and in the company of leading humanists. His early works are no longer youthful pieces but the style is still stormy and expressive, incorporating ideas he may have acquired in Hungary and Poland. With these works Cranach paved the way for the Danube School.
