This Sarum Missal was produced between 1240 and 1260 in the scriptorium attached to Salisbury Cathedral. It belongs to a small group of manuscripts including the Amesbury Psalter and the Wilton Psalter, made for religious communities or individual patrons of considerable means.

The missal is a parchment codex of 266 leaves, each measuring roughly 318 by 203 millimetres, written in two columns of thirty-five lines per page, and bound in skin over wooden boards. It contains the texts required for the celebration of Mass according to the Use of Sarum.

The manuscript opens with a calendar, followed by the Ordinary and Canon of the Mass. It proceeds through the Masses for the liturgical seasons from Advent through the year, the Masses related to the Saints, and other types of masses and prayers.

The decoration on the folios consists of initials and full-page miniatures. The bodies of the historiated initials contain narrative or figural scenes relating to the text they introduce. The manuscript's artistic centrepiece is a sequence of eight full-page miniatures that form a Passion cycle from the Annunciation to the Resurrection.
